The Wakefield Grannies’ MayDay Celebration
Fun for the whole family: Marketplace, Costume to Collectible Jewelry, CD Exchange,
fine food from Wakefield restaurants and caterers, workshops, drumming classes,
a May Pole and premiering a new film, The Great Granny Revolution.
March 22, 2007…The Wakefield Grannies announced today that they are partnering
with the Wakefield-La Pêche Community Centre Cooperative to co-host the
Village May Day celebrations this year on May 5th. A full day of activities will
take place at the Community Centre beginning with a Red Hat Garage Sale in the morning.
In the afternoon from 1 to 4:30 p.m. there will be a marketplace, food court, workshops
and dancing around the May Pole. Admission is free. Then at 5 and 7:30 p.m. the
Wakefield Grannies will Premier the documentary, THE GREAT GRANNY REVOLUTION at the
Wakefield United Church on River Road. Tickets are $10 and available at the door,
Chez Eric, Jamboree and Solstice.
Daytime activities are geared to all ages and many are free. These include drumming
for young people, the Phoenix Workshop Theatre performing improvisations based on input
from the audience, a music session with Julian Geisterfer and his father, storytelling
workshops and more.
In the May Day Marketplace the Wakefield Grannies are joined by 10 other Granny groups
from the Ottawa region who will have tables to sell their fundraising crafts and food.
The Wakefield Grannies will again have their CD EXCHANGE and there will be a NEW table
with jewelry that has been donated by women all over the region. After only a few weeks
of collecting we are already able to predict a very exciting display of jewelry from
costume to collectible. Definitely worth a visit.
At the food court there will be fine food from Wakefield Restaurants, from our most
talented caterers and organic farmers. Everything from sushi, savoury pies and barbequed
boar to Bean Fair coffee and delicacies from the Patisserie will be on offer.
After 2 years of filming the Wakefield Grannies and their South African partners,
documentary Director and Editor Robert Rooney will present his new film,
THE GREAT GRANNY REVOLUTION in the village where much of the story took place.
Both showing will be preceded by a short concert from Wakefield’s own Notables Quartet.
Following the second showing at 7:30 p.m. Rooney and the Wakefield Grannies will answer
questions at a reception downstairs. Tickets to the showings are $10 and are available
at the door, Chez Eric, Solstice and Jamboree in Wakefield, or by calling 819 459 2563.
“Our community has been amazingly supportive of the work of the Wakefield Grannies
and we wanted to do something in return,” said Chair, Linda Gorka. “That is why there
is no admission charge and as much as possible workshops and other activities are free
or by donation. For us May Day is a celebration of our community, our solidarity with
each other and the women of Alexandra Township. We hope everyone will come out for at
least a little while to celebrate spring and welcome the Grannies’ groups from across the region.”
